The true measure of runway is how many pivots a startup has left: the number of opportunities it has to make a fundamental change to its business strategy.

— Eric Reis in The Lean Startup

One can stretch the metaphor too far, but companies are not the only complex systems that require pivots and reinventions. People need them too. And when it comes to longevity, we all face the possibility of expiring years—even decades—before we give up the ghost.

Two hundred years ago, the life expectancy of the average human was less than half of what it is today. This will continue to improve as medical science and technology develop, but this makes personal renewal an even more essential capacity. What else can we do with all that life?

So what if the measure of our longevity was not just how many years we get to live, but the number of times we are in danger of stagnation and still find ways to make ourselves anew?

What if we stopped counting birthdays and counted reincarnations instead?
